| Welcome to the website of the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland |
|
This page offers only the most general information on the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland. The rest of the website is – for the moment – available only in Dutch.
The Regionaal Archief Rivierenland
The Regionaal Archief Rivierenland is located in the city of Tiel, Holland. It has the custody over the historical archives of the municipalities of Buren, Culemborg, Geldermalsen, Neder-Betuwe, Neerijnen and Tiel and the former water-boards "polderdistrict Tieler- and Culemborgerwaarden" and "polderdistrict Betuwe" and their predecessors. The Regionaal Archief Rivierenland takes care of a proper arrangement and description of these archives. These archives are public and for perusal free of charge, usually if they are older than twenty years.
Furthermore, the archives preserve and collect numerous archives of local and regional private institutions, like churches, care institutions, foundations and clubs and companies. Private individuals also sometimes transfer their archive or collection of historical material to the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland.
Besides, the archive owns large collections of newspapers, books and magazines. Also for maps, drawings, prints, photos, picture postcards, slides, films, audiotapes and videos you can find what you need. The collections of letterheadings and prayer cards are rich sources for genealogists. By the way, for genealogical research the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland has separately disclosed the most important registers with records of the Registry Office, the register of births, deaths and marriages and the ecclesiastical baptismal, marriage and funeral registers. In total, the archives and collections under the custody of the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland consist of some 5-6 kilometers of documents.
Free access
All archives older than twenty years and the collections managed by the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland are in principle freely accessible for historical and genealogical research. For the protection of peoples privacy, some of the documents are only made public after a longer period of time. For instance, the archives of notaries are not made public before they are 75 years old. If you want a reproduction of an archival piece or an image, the costs will be charged to you. Everyone may visit the archives during opening hours. While visiting an archives service you will have to keep to some house regulations.
Although all of the material is organised by the archive, not all questions on local and regional history can be answered easily. Often elaborate archival research is necessary. Studying archives requires patience and understanding of the history of the area. The staff of the archives can assist you with their advice. Archival research also requires some practical skills. Many documents dating to before 1800 are hard to read and to understand without due knowledge of old writing. Moreover, the registers of the catholic churches before 1811 are mostly written in Latin. Making available In the study-rooms of the archives you can study archival pieces. Sometimes pieces may not be accessed because of the poor condition they are in. These can only be studied after restoration. Research nowadays is not confined to just studying the old parchment and paper documents. More and more sources become available via computers. Archival pieces and publications will also be available on microfiche or CD-ROM. From the microfiche or the CD-ROM photocopies prints can be easily made. Original archival pieces may, if the age, size and condition permit it, be copied. If this is regrettably impossible, it is sometimes possible to have a print made with a digital camera. Genealogical research For genealogical research the services are mainly concentrated in the study-room at Tiel. Here you can find, for the larger part on microfiche, the registers of births, deaths and marriages of the (former) municipalities in the area. The baptismal, marriage and funeral registers are in some cases not available at the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland. For more detailed information, see page "genealogie" on this website (in Dutch) or contact the central office at Tiel. Judicial and notarial archives The Regionaal Archief Rivierenland has at its disposal the old judicial archive of Tiel and Zandwijk (1431-1811) and the notarial archives of Tiel (1811-1915) and Drumpt (1815-1822). The judicial and notarial archives from the rest of the area are located at "Het Gelders Archief" in Arnhem. Atlas Landwehr-Vogels An extraordinary collection of the Regionaal Archief Rivierenland is the atlas Landwehr-Vogels. This is a unique collection of 18th and 19th century embroidery patterns. It can be seen by appointment in the study-room at Tiel. Reference library The study-rooms at Tiel, Buren and Geldermalsen have historical reference libraries at their disposal. The library in Tiel is the most general one, the one in Buren is mostly oriented at Buren and the Neder-Betuwe. In Geldermalsen you can find mainly publications concerning Geldermalsen and its surroundings.
Information centre
The Regionaal Archief Rivierenland is the regional historical centre of the area. Co-operating with museums and historical societies, we devote ourselves to conserving, managing and utilising the historical heritage. As it were, the archive preserves the collective memory of the area. In addition to the ability to use the fonds and collections for research, we sometimes also carry out research for publications and exhibitions. The results of their research in the archives and collections are partly published, of course in Dutch language. These descriptions, called inventories, are available from the archives. The Regionaal Archief Rivierenland has its own series of publications. In this series, inventories and editions of historical sources are being published. Besides this archive publishes a magazine: De Drie Steden ("The Three Cities").
